How the broadband cost per mbps maths works
Broadband advertising is built around the headline monthly price, which is the one number that does not tell you what the deal costs. Setup fees, activation charges, router delivery and mid-contract price rises all land outside it. The only fair comparison is the total you will hand over across the whole contract divided by its length — the true monthly cost.
Once you have that, cost per Mbps turns two incomparable deals into one number. A £24 deal at 67 Mbps is 36p per Mbps; a £29 deal at 500 Mbps is under 6p. The second looks more expensive on the shelf and is dramatically better value per unit of speed. This calculator uses roughly 43p per Mbps as the UK average benchmark, which is where a mid-range part-fibre package typically lands.
Speed you cannot use is still worth something, but not linearly. A two-person household streaming and video-calling is comfortable at 100 Mbps. A family of five with 4K TVs, consoles and cloud backups benefits from 500 Mbps and above. Upload speed matters more than most people expect if anyone works from home — full fibre gives you symmetric or near-symmetric upload, part-fibre does not.
The big saving in UK broadband is almost never in the deal you pick — it is in not rolling onto an out-of-contract price. Set a calendar reminder for the month your contract ends and re-run this calculator then.
How this is calculated
True monthly cost = ((monthly price × contract months) + setup fee) ÷ contract months. Cost per Mbps = true monthly cost ÷ download speed. Total contract cost = (monthly price × months) + setup fee. The benchmark comparison uses a UK average of £0.43 per Mbps.
- 1Enter the advertised monthly price for the deal.
- 2Enter the advertised average download speed in Mbps.
- 3Add any setup or activation fee and the contract length.
- 4Compare the cost per Mbps against the UK average shown.
